Dixie Escalante is owned by the people it serves.
Customers control their service by electing board members who meet on a
monthly basis to decide the policies and procedures of the cooperative. Thus,
Dixie Escalante employees are directly accountable to their consumer owners on a
consistent basis.
During the course of the year there is an opportunity for all Dixie Escalante
customers to attend the annual membership meeting to elect representatives to
the board of directors, enjoy a great outdoor meal and obtain an update of
events shaping the future of the cooperative. Members are encouraged to be
active and involved members of their Co-op. Entire families are invited to the
meeting. During the business portion of the meeting a brief financial report is
given as well as the results of the election. The Annual Meeting is held each
year on the second Tuesday of June.
Dixie Escalante’s Board of Directors is democratically elected by the
membership to manage and direct the affairs of the cooperative. All of the
powers of the corporation – with the exception of those powers that are
explicitly reserved to the membership – reside with the Board. This includes
borrowing money, establishing rates, entering into contracts with consultants,
adopting budgets, authorizing the construction of power lines, informing the
membership, planning and conducting the Annual Meeting, employing personnel,
etc. The Board exercises these powers at regularly scheduled meetings. It
ordinarily accomplishes the goals of the rural electric system by delegating
specific responsibilities to a professional general manager who manages the
system on a day-to-day basis.
